Art from the Land of Cleve

The Cleveland Museum of Art is a fantastic museum. The only fee is for parking and the Armor Court is amazing. It's so amazing that they don't allow photographs — they want you to buy their book.

But I noticed that they have finally put (tiny) pictures of their holdings on line. Some of my favorites are:

• Hunting near Hartenfels Castle, a painting by Lucas Cranach. I love this painting. This is tucked away by the crossbows in the armor court. All of the gentles, armed with crossbows, are hunting a ridiculous variety of game: boar, bear, hart, geese, etc. And it all takes place in an approximately 100-foot square area.
• Tunic with Decorated Bands and Roundels from 7th-8th century Egypt. It's woven as one piece and is quite striking. Hmm… it's also noted as being 'not on display.'
• Swords and rapiers — all kinds of them! I especially like this Spanish rapier and main gauche set.
• Sexy Indian Sculptures. 'Nuff said.
