Cleaning up today I found two ticket stubs for X-Men at Westgate Cinemas on the 16th of July 2000. I often run across these. In fact, I used to keep them in a tin on top of my dresser with other important sundries like cartoons clipped from the newspaper and precious lint.
So in a fit of sanity, I tossed them into the minty fresh paper recycling bag I set up. Then I realized I wanted to document this. It is a red letter day.
The problem is one of posterity. The assumption is that some day I will be important enough that everyone will want to know what I was doing on the 16th of July in the year 2000. That's the assumption behind holding onto these things. That's when it struck me — who gives a f***?
I don't even care when I saw the movie, and I'm the one who saw it that day. Having this journal is bad enough, but at least I'm documenting something for myself. I'm documenting micro-and macroscopic reactions to various stimuli, along with the occasional holler from a friend or lunatic. It's a personal blog. I don't need hits. I don't need to advertise it. It's for myself, for now. And maybe somebody will google “Krazy Kat” or “Iraqi War, Jr. is turning into Viet Nam” and find the thoughts of another human who isn't pretending he's writing an article for Encyclopedia Britannica or Rupert Murdoch.
What's important is our true legacy: our friendships, our chosen family bonds (blood or otherwise), our heartwork and soulsharings.
It's kind of sad, but before clear thinking prevailed, I almost created a searchable database based on all the remaining stubs to be found and acquired.
Oh, and if you want to know my thoughts on the movie, just read on.
Yay Ian McKellen (have you seen his crazy Macbeth?), but they cut too many scenes. It felt unfinished at the time and the cut scenes on the DVD confirmed that. The sequel was better, too.
