Bobblin' on the Road

Beat Bobblehead
It seems that sports and literature are finding a happy fit in Lowell, Massachusetts. Yes, that's the hometown of Jack Kerouac, author of Dharma Bums and (sigh) yes, On the Road. I quote:

The first 1,000 fans at the Aug. 21 game between the Lowell Spinners and Williamsport Crosscutters of the Class A New York-Penn League will receive bobbing likenesses of Jack Kerouac.

Now if we could just get that William S. Burroughs bobblehead…

Thanks to J.U. on the Raindogs Mailing List for the heads up.

Why the sigh?

Because On the Road is about Jack sleeping on couches and slacking crappy jobs. That may be have been revolutionary at some point (and if you're asking why that was so, you're getting my point), but it's hardly a satisfying work. If you haven't yet, read Naked Lunch — please.

btw, I love Jack's Dharma Bums. It's the best work by him that I've yet read. If you have suggestions for further Kerouac reading, let me know.
