X-Men 2

Did you relate to the pain of the mutants when you read of their adventures in the comics? Did you deeply understand their existential dilemma? Were you waiting for background radiation to work its wonders on you as you schlepped through adolescence? Have you not yet seen the latest X-Men movie? Go see it now.

Indeed, Jarret Keene of Las Vegas CityLife has an insightful review of X2: X-Men United. His assessment of the political themes of the movie, especially their relevance to our present situation, is astute. More reviews at Rotten Tomatoes.

For my small part, let me declare that the writing, acting and direction stand miles above any other mere 'superhero' flick (hmm, forgot about Superman… this might be hyperbole for effect —- and that's a DC hero anyway). The story is supreme here and reigns over the special effects. Not only that, they let the story run its course over the two and a half hours, but you won't notice the passage of time since the pacing (that's the result of the editing) is so tight. At one point, I wondered if the comic book could convey the level of emotion I was feeling in response to the film. There are no obvious mistakes here.

If you were disappointed by the first X-Men movie, you will be surprised by the sequel's logical plot development.

My favorite thing about the film: Mystique gets character development. Yeah, it's the real deal.
