State of the Union

Every year at this time I think about Thomas Jefferson, who delivered a letter to Congress and didn't make a big show. That was before electronic media.

This year, as usual, I'm not enlightened by the address. Bush did mention the ecology, which is surely lip service, but, then again, he is a stubborn person. He may actually mean it in his own way. Hydrogen cars? Hell yes! The people clapping seemed surprised. Reminds me of a friend who told me about a Paul Harvey segment that discussed hydrogen powered cars. My friend believed it was hushed up or bought and buried by a big auto manufacturer.

What the hell is MS/NBC doing? A focus group's worth of sound bites — let's fly around the room and fill the air with … stuff. Okay …
